The Vital Importance of Blood
“Rakta is the root of the body, for when blood is pure, the body glows with vitality.”
-Charaka Samhita
In Ayurveda, blood—rakta dhatu—is life itself. It carries oxygen, nutrients and prana (vital energy) throughout the body, sustaining every cell and organ. When your blood is healthy, your skin glows, your mind feels steady, your digestion hums and your hormones flow in harmony. But when blood becomes depleted, stagnant, or overheated, your body will speak—through fatigue, breakouts/acne, PMS, irregular cycles, or heavy bleeding—> aka hormonal imbalance.
For women, blood health is intimately tied to hormonal balance and the menstrual cycle. Each month, your blood changes—its quality, temperature, volume, and vitality shift with your natural hormonal rhythms. During the follicular phase, blood builds and strengthens; around ovulation, it moves with vibrancy and heat; and in the luteal and menstrual phases, it transitions, releases and renews. By syncing your diet, movement and rest with these natural changes, you nourish your blood at every stage—supporting your hormones, performance and emotional well-being.
In my own work with clients, I often see signs of depleted or overheated blood show up in subtle but telling ways:
low libido
menstrual pain
dizziness
fatigue
low or high blood pressure
pale lips, eyelids and fingernails
nausea
fevers
loose stools
excessively heavy or scanty periods
cystic acne
allergies
diminished interest or motivation
lack of clarity and future direction
stuck in old patterns or behavior
anger/frustration
These patterns reveal how deeply blood health affects not just the menstrual cycle but overall energy, digestion and emotional well-being. These symptoms impact everyday life and your ability to show up for it.
Current culture often asks women to push through every phase the same way, but Ayurveda reminds us that true strength comes from alignment, not resistance and modern research shows us there is a rhyme and reason to optimizing workouts based on your menstrual cycle. Supporting your blood health means honoring your body’s cyclical nature—eating grounding foods when blood is rebuilding, increasing iron-rich and warming meals when it’s moving, and resting deeply when it’s releasing. Plants like fennel, aloe and dark leafy greens can purify, cool and rejuvenate the blood, while ghee, beets and dates keep it strong and nourished.
