In Ayurveda, the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, & Kapha—are energetic forces that govern all physical and mental processes.
They are an embodiment of the five elements— space, air, fire, water & earth. Each person has a unique ratio of these five elements which determines their constitution. Diet, lifestyle, environment and seasons all influence these elements and therefore the doshas. Understanding your own constitution equips you with tools to be able to balance them through different stages and seasons of life.
The Doshas of Ayurveda
-

Vata: Air & Space
The energy of movement. It controls bodily functions like breathing, circulation and nerve impulses. When balanced, it brings creativity, flexibility and joy; when imbalanced, it can cause anxiety, dryness, and restlessness.
Qualities: light, dry, cold, mobile, subtle, rough, hard
-

Pitta: Fire & Water
The energy of transformation. Pitta governs digestion, metabolism and intellect. A balanced Pitta promotes focus and determination, while excess can lead to irritability, inflammation, or heat related imbalances.
Qualities: hot, sharp, intense, oily, light, mobile
-

Kapha: Earth & Water
The energy of structure and stability. It provides strength, immunity and emotional calm. In balance, Kapha fosters compassion and resilience; in excess, it may cause sluggishness, congestion, or attachment.
Qualities: heavy, slow, soft, oily, cool, stable, dense
