Barley Water
A sweet and astringent grain used in Ayurveda to support the uterus. The astringent quality provides a scraping effect allowing the uterus to be cleared and cleansed especially after menstruation or during postpartum. The sweet quality provides grounding, stability and nourishment. Cooking barley with lots of water softens these qualities so they more easily received by the body. Begin incorporating this recipe into your weekly meal plans if you experience signs of uterine stagnation or are seeking easy-to-digest nourishment.
Barley Water
1 cup of barley grains (preferably hulled or pearl barley)
8-14 cups of water depending on your desired consistency (watery vs soupy)
optional spices
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground turmeric
1 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
In a large pot over low heat, boil the barley, water, spices together, partially covered for one hour or until the grain breaks up and the soup appears creamy. Stir well and serve in a soup bowl. Enjoy as a light meal or strain and sip throughout the day for hydration.
